TCR goes for worldwide availability with Microsoft Azure

Since TCR started hiring equipment in 1999 to support airport ground operations, the company has experienced spectacular growth. TCR today has nearly 1000 employees and is present at 140 airports in more than 18 countries. To prepare the IT infrastructure for further internationalization, TCR, together with Savaco, opted for a migration to the public cloud of Microsoft Azure.

Worldwide availability with Microsoft Azure

"In 2015 presented TCR with a number of tough challenges with a significant impact in the field of IT," says Dries Bertier, IT Director at TCR. "Our on-premise data center in Europe was in need of replacement. We had just started our activities in Asia at the time and noticed that making workloads available from our data center to our site in Malaysia caused quite a delay. Given the further growth plans we already had at the time, we were therefore looking for a way to scale our IT infrastructure and our company from a European to a global environment. "

TCR had worked with Savaco for a long time and therefore asked their permanent IT partner for this challenge. Together with Savaco, TCR decided to take the step to Microsoft Azure. After all, the hyper-scalability and the global reach of this public cloud service allow latency to be reduced to a minimum by long distances, and is so scalable that it can perfectly support the further growth of TCR.

Specifically, a hybrid environment was switched. The existing data center in Europe was renewed and supplemented with a Disaster Recovery solution in Azure. The sites in Asia opted for a complete IaaS infrastructure in Azure, in particular in a virtual data center in Singapore. Here too one can fall back on Azure for Disaster Recovery, but in a virtual data center in Hong Kong.

With Savaco we have a sparring partner who actively thinks along with us. The Savaco team worked out the full design of our new environment for us down to the smallest details, so that we knew where we were going from the start. During the migration itself, we were able to count on a carefully composed project team of technical experts, each with their own specialization in certain sub-domains. The project was continuously monitored and adjusted where necessary. And even today we can call on Savaco experts to keep our Azure environment in good condition and further optimize it

Tips for those who want to start with cloud

At TCR they are already satisfied that they have taken the step to the public cloud. But the journey towards a fully cloud-based IT platform is certainly not a challenge without hurdles, Dries Bertier also knows. He therefore likes to give some tips for companies that want to work with Azure:

"It is necessary to understand how the cloud works. In addition, good preparation is half the battle. And when implementing a cloud environment, only rely on experts and certified engineers."
